Whyte Devon Women's 2017
Same as Whyte's award-winning 21st century disc brake road bike, the Dorset, but with compact frame to offer a better fit for shorter riders.
Compact frame
With its shorter reach to the handlebars and its extra stepover height, the Devon is primarily designed for women. However, Whyte describe this bike as 'Compact-Fit' rather than 'ladies' to underline the fact that it could be the perfect bike for shorter guys too.
With its TRP HyRd cable-operated hydraulic disc brake, its carbon fork and its Shimano 4700 Tiagra shifters and mechs, the Devon is a great choice if you're looking for a compact-fit cross / gravel / adventure bike with extra speed potential.
Upgrades from Whyte Somerset
- Carbon forks are lighter weight and are more shock absorbent than steel or alloy forks. Carbon fork blades are also stiffer for more precise steering.
- TRP HyRd cable-operated hydraulic disc brakes work with conventional brake levers, yet they offer the adjustability and power previously reserved for hydraulic brakes. The advantage of this system over any previous cable-actuated disc brake system is that the pads are much easier to set up at an optimal distance from the rotor without rubbing. These brakes automatically self adjust so the pads move closer to the rotor as they wear down. This means that TRP (Tektro Racing Products) HyRd disc brakes maintain optimal performance over the whole life of every set of pads (just like full hydraulic brakes).
- To quote road.cc's review'TRP Hy/Rd disc brakes combine cable actuation with hydraulic power right in the calliper. They're powerful, easy to live with and the best solution so far for disc brakes with conventional brake/gear levers.'
- Given that a set of TRP HyRd front and rear brakes retail at around £200, opting for the Whyte Dorset is a very worthwhile upgrade.
- Cartridge sealed bearing hubs make for smoother-rolling wheels.
- Shimano Tiagra shifters boast concealed cable routing under the bar tape (previously reserved for Dura-Ace, Ultegra and 105) for a neater finish, while the front mech's longer link arm delivers faster gear shifts.
- The Devon rolls on Schwalbe S-One 700x30 tyres which are highly rated by, for instance, RCUK.

Disc Brakes
Moving the brakes from the mud and rain-attracting wheel rims to the relatively clean hubs makes for an improvement in the brakes’ all-weather all-conditions performance. Disc brake pads are much harder so they last much longer. Disc brakes tend to need far less maintenance compared with rim brakes because they don't require such frequent adjustment to compensate for brake pad wear. The wheel rims should also last much longer now that they are no longer being worn down by the brake pads.
Flat Mount dropouts
For flush disc brake mounting.
Strong Wheels
Whyte deep section rims are lightweight, strong and contribute to the bicycle's authentic road bike looks. The rims' 3M reflective decals enhance safety. The rear wheel's offset spoke hole design effectively equalises spoke tension on both sides to create a stronger rear wheel, whose lateral stiffness you'll appreciate every time you accelerate. To further ensure reliability, Whyte build these wheels with WTB black Sandvic stainless steel spokes - rated by many wheel builders as among the best money can buy.
Mudguard and Rack Compatible
Full mudguard and rack compatibility means the Whyte Devon could easily double as a fast touring / commuting / everyday bike. Custom dropouts enable Whyte to mount the rear hydraulic disc brake caliper inside the rear triangle, making it rack and mudguard compatible. Whyte even make their own RD7 mudguardsto match this bike. If you want mudguards and/or any other extras fitted, let us know when you order the bike and we will customise it to your requirements at no extra labour charge.
Whyte Custom-Drawn Hydroformed Butted Aluminium Tubing
Whyte premium grade 6061 aluminium frame tubes are hydro-formed - a process where hot oil is pumped through the tubes at pressure to fine-tune their profile.
Every tube is custom drawn to Whyte's own specification - thin walled where it can be, thicker walled where it has to be. Custom drawn hydroformed tubing helps make Whyte frames among the lightest weight and most comfortable at every price point.
'SPORTS ROAD COMMUTER DISC - RD7
We've grown up riding and racing the tough roads and tougher weather of Britain, but only now have we been able to make the perfect bike for not just surviving but thriving in these conditions.
The latest research proves that tubeless 30mm tyres are as fast as skinnier tyres on typically rough road surfaces but far more surefooted and comfortable. The precise fingertip feedback of hydraulic disc brakes means assured descending confidence whatever the last cloud or tractor dumped on the next corner. Wide range gearing lets you spin efficiently where you used to struggle, so you hit hill after hill fresh not broken.
A collection of components is useless without the frame to match though, so in the words of our former Elite, UCI ranked road racing designer Ian, we've created the ultimate "21st century British road bike.” Light, aerodynamic and precise steering for searing speed, but with the rear stay and 27.2mm seat post compliance to fight fatigue all day.
Naturally it's got ample clearances for large volume tyres and all the weather sealed, non frame-rubbing DOX internal cable routing wisdom of our MTBs. We've even designed our own flush-fit mudguards because you're never far from rain even in July and we know this is a bike you'll want to ride every day for sportives, Strava, fitness or just because serious performance is seriously fun.
