General Sizing Tips
Clothing
When sizing any garment, it is important to consider what discipline the garment is for as there will be different fits for each style. For example, road cycling race fit clothing will be designed for efficiency so should be tight without being restrictive. For road cycling, you do have more relaxed fit clothing that will be designed to be a bit looser and will be more comfortable for the majority of cyclists.
Mountain biking apparel will generally be a little looser fitting so a bit more to do with your personal preference although cross country mountain bikers might opt for something a bit closer fitting for a bit more efficiency.
When leisure cycling or commuting, it will be all about your personal preference - if you want to be nice and efficient then opt for something a little closer fitting as a larger, billowing jacket or shorts will slow you down significantly. If you are not concerned about efficiency or speed then opting for a looser fitting garment will usually result in more comfort for most people.
Shoes
Again, as with clothing, choosing the correct size shoes will depend on the discipline and whether or not you are using the shoes off the bike as well. If you are cycling road then the shoe should be snug but not tight. The reason for this is that you do not want any movement where your foot rubs the iinside of the shoe as this will result in blisters and sometimes sores.
For mountain biking it is a very similar idea - you want the shoes to be snug, with little foot movement when on the bike but because you will potentially be walking in these shoes off the bike, you want to make sure you can walk comfortably in these too. Mountain bike shoes will be more about striking the balance of on-bike and off-bike.
Hybrid and leisure cycling will be similar to choosing mountain biking shoes as you want to balance on bike stiffmnes and comfort with walking comfort.
Helmets
For helmet sizing, it is best to measure the circumference of your head at the widest part and choose a helmet based on that. The only advice we would give is pay mind to the seasons you are wearing the helmet in. If you only to plan to wear the helmet in summer then you do not need to plan to wear anything under the helmet. If you are cycling in Spring, Autumn or Winter then factor in wearing a thermal cap or hat underneath and sometimes this requires you to size up.
Children's sizes
We are sure this one goes without saying but when buying for children, it is best to actually come into store to try the sizes as we would want to size up so the clothes last more than 5 minutes.
If you ever require assistance with clothing size chart then please either come into store or contact us and we can help you to find the perfect item and fit.
