How are Children's bikes Measured
Children's bikes are referred to by their wheel size or wheel diameter and the larger the wheel size, the larger the frame size that goes along with it. Balance bikes for younger children start from as low as a 12 inch wheel and the largest kids pedal bikes can have 26 inch wheels . Frog bikes have many different sizes for many different age ranges - from approximately 18 month olds to 10 years plus.
When choosing the correct size bike for your child, there are two factors to consider. The first is that the reach to the handlebars is not too much and the second is that there is clearance over the crossbar when the child is standing over the bike (standover height). It is incredibly important to get the correct size bike for children as this will make the bike as safe as possible while still allowing room to grow into the bike.
How to Choose the best kids bike
Apart from picking the correct size for the child, there are other factors when choosing a childrens bike like the materials used for the frame and the weight of the bike. Gone are the days when all kids bikes were heavy and difficult to use when cycling. Brands like Frog popularised the lightweight aluminium bikes knowing that a lighter bike will be easier and more enjoyable for a child to ride. Other brands like Specialized, Giant and Ridgeback have now also started producing lightweight, quality kids bikes.
Another important factor when choosing the correct kids bike is the componentry used, particularly the brake and gear levers. In the past they used parts from adult bikes on a childs bike such as the brakes and gear levers. These would be difficult for little hands as these levers were designed for adult sized hands. Most children's bike brands use children specific levers to make shifting and braking easier.
Here is a ticklist of what makes a perfect bike for kids.
-
It is the correct size
-
It is a nice, lightweight frame
-
Uses specific children's components such as brake and gear levers
-
Is a robust and well made frame and fork to deal with a child's use
If you pop into any of our stores we would happily let the child sit on the bike and even arrange a short test ride to ensure the bike is correct.
Kids bikes Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the common questions we get asked regarding children's bikes and sizing.
What size Frog bike is best for my child?
Choosing the right size bike for your child is a balancing act of getting a bike that is safe and easy to use for the child but will offer around one and a half to two years of growth. To achieve this, the child would need to clearance over the top tube when standing over the bike but not much. Around 15 to 20mm of clearance would usually indicate that the bike would have the maximum growth available but would still be safe for the child to ride.
If the child lacks confidence or is getting their first bike, it can sometimes be useful to choose a slightly smaller bike but knowing that this will not last as long.
Are Frog bikes suitable for beginners?
Frog bikes are very good for beginner cycling or even for teaching kids to cycle as they have a lightweight frame and child friendly brake levers and gear levers (for the bikes that have gears). To aid beginner cyclists, the smaller frog bikes can be fit with removable stabilisers to help the child find their balance.
Can Frog bikes be adjusted as my child grows?
All Frog bikes, including the balance bikes, have an adjustable seat height that can be raised as the child grows. We occasionally get asked if the handlebars can be raised and while this is possible, this usually indicates they need a bigger bike. Raising the handlebar height would likely only stretch out the longevity by a couple of months.
What accessories are compatible with Frog bikes?
There are a number of accessories that are compatible with Frog bikes. Below is a list of the compatible accessories that can go with a Frog bike.
-
Frog Kickstand - This is the number one accessory for Frog Bikes. This kickstand mounts in the centre of the bike by the bottom bracket and allows the child to stand the bike up when not in use
-
Frog frame mount kickstand - This is the new kickstand that fits all Frogs with a mount towards the rear of the bike. If you are unsure whenther this is compatible with your Frog, please get in touch.
-
Frog Rear Derailleur Cage Protector - This simple but effective piece of kit protects the rear derailleur if the bike gets dropped on it's side (as we know kids are likely to do).
-
Frog Reversible Side Entry Bottle Cage - This ingenius bottle cage can be mounted so that it can be used from either the right or the left. The side entry means that this can fit in the smaller space on most Frog bikes. Please note that this does not fit on the smaller Frog sizes (Frog 40, 44 or 47)
-
Frog Bottle - A Frog branded water bottle for smaller hands.
Can Frog bikes be used for off-road cycling?
The Frog pedal bikes come with a knobbly gravel tyre so Frog bikes are excellent fro cycling on gravel and forest paths. We also have many parents saying that the Frog bikes are good for a blue (easy) mountain bikes trail centres.
How do you maintain a Frog bike?
It is quite simple to maintain a Frog bike. All you really have to do is keep it clean so the risk of dirtying clothes is kept to a minimum (and your own if/when you need to carry the bike). The frame can be wiped down with a clean rag but the chain is a bit more involved - you need a good degreaser to spray on the chain, wait a bit and then wash off with water. Once done, lightly lube the chain to keep it running smoothly.
What safety features do Frog bikes have?
Frog bikes conform to British standard BSEN14765 and are fitted with either one brake on balance bikes or two brakes on the pedal bikes. Frog bikes are fitted with reflectors and bells as are required by British law to increase visibility and safety on these bikes.
Also, if you buy from us, your local bike shop, these bikes are assembled and checked by qualified mechanics before they are collected or delivered to you to ensure that they are safe to ride and are in perfect working order.
We hope this has helped with your decision of which Frog bike would be best for your child's height and preferences. As always though, if you have any queries or need some assistance in choosing the correct bike, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
